Exploring the ‘S’ in ESG: Why Social Responsibility Matters

Work defines so much of our lives. That’s why we brought together representatives from across the business spectrum, BAE Systems, NORi HR, IoD Lancashire, Nybble IT and University of Lancashire, alongside Community Foundation for Lancashire (CFL) CEO Rae Brooke, to explore the importance of the “S” in ESG.

The roundtable, recorded by Bigtank, will form the basis of a forthcoming whitepaper by CFL and University of Lancashire. Together, participants examined how businesses of every size can embed social responsibility into their culture, governance, and everyday practices.

Key themes included:

  • Helping SMEs see that meaningful social engagement is possible and impactful
  • Taking manageable steps to approach social responsibility, the first and most important step: to act
  • The relationship between governance and social responsibility
  • A businesses duty to improve the lives of employees and customers
  • Embedding the “S” beyond the boardroom into culture and mindset
  • How younger generations are drawn to businesses that make the world better
  • Ensuring due diligence in giving, so that social investments deliver real results
  • The benefits for business, from attracting talent to enhancing skills of the future generations as well as the unseen benefits to the wider community

It was inspiring to see members of the panel who are Lancashire Investors in Community (LIiC) share how their attitudes to social responsibility influence their personal lives, organisations, and commitment to wider communities. Their involvement demonstrates how LIiC membership offers a simple yet powerful way for business leaders to achieve tangible results and accessible routes to meaningful community impact.

The conversation reaffirmed that social responsibility isn’t an optional add-on. It’s a mindset, a commitment, and a strategy that benefits employees, communities, and businesses alike.
