“More Than What She’s Been Through”: Minhal’s Story

In Lancashire, police recorded more than 36,000 domestic abuse-related incidents and crimes in a single year. For women leaving refuges and support services, the next step can often be the hardest: Idle Women is changing that.

In April 2025, five women from the programme became paid trainees on the new Arts and Social Justice Traineeships, three as producers and two as community gardeners.

Minhal, one of the women selected to be part of the traineeship, explains how Idle Women has made a difference.

“I’m originally Pakistani Balochi from the city Karachi. I connected to Idle Women nine years ago because I found there was something very authentic about it. They see you as a person, rather than just your circumstances.

Idle Women is a safe space. Here, you learn, you develop, and you discover more about yourself. It’s not just about learning a new skill. When you listen to other members and their perspectives, you don’t just grow as an individual, you grow as a community. You feel connected. You relate to people, but you also realise how different everyone is.

It has helped me realise the pressure on us women, how we’re expected to behave, what we’re told we should be doing, and what we’re told we shouldn’t be doing.

The (Idle Women) team say, ‘I believe in you,’ even when you’re self-doubting. ‘I think you’re amazing, and you can do that. I’m your safety net as well. I don’t care what the world out there says, or what you’ve heard your whole life. What matters is now. We’re together, and we’ll get it done.’

Now I understand. You are capable, and you are more than just what you have experienced. You can do more than you realise. The sky’s the limit.”

Your support can help more women across Lancashire move beyond crisis and build a safer, more hopeful future. By donating to the Lancashire Women’s Fund, you can help grassroots organisations create the trusted spaces, practical opportunities and belief that enable women like Minhal to recognise their strengths and fulfil their potential. Please consider making a gift today—every contribution can help open the door to lasting change.
