Team Rise: Where everyone thrives
CFL recently visited Team Rise to learn more about how their work transforms lives. Team Rise supports adults with learning disabilities, autism, and those who are vulnerable, lonely, or socially isolate, in one of the most deprived areas of the country, and one of the highest rates of disability.
Their mission is to give individuals opportunities to develop skills, socialise, and explore personal goals through a wide range of educational, social, and practical activities. Above all, Team Rise ensures that everyone who attends has fun, laughs often, and builds meaningful, lasting friendships.
With tailored and empathetic support, Team Rise empowers around 100 individuals to contribute positively to their communities, helping to reduce social isolation and loneliness. Recent funding of £20,589 from seven grants—including ACE Lets Create Jubilee Fund, Christal Foundation, and Marsden Building Society—has enabled projects such as community tea parties, training and support for vulnerable people, discos organised by adults with learning disabilities, relationship and sexuality programmes, fitness sessions, and financial literacy workshops
Sharon’s testimonial
“I’m Sharon, CEO of Team Rise. Team Rise really came about by chance. I was asked while working for a recruitment company to help people with learning disabilities look at the tools for work, not necessarily getting a job. It went so well we ran it again, and then I was asked to develop it further. At first, we had about five or six members, but the money promised never came through. Eventually, I was told either stop or do it myself, so I carried on.
Today, our service is in huge demand. We provide a safe, welcoming place where people with learning disabilities can meet, build friendships, learn skills, and gain independence. We cook together, go out into the community, use public transport, and make sure everyone has a healthy meal. What makes us different is that we give people the chance to do things for themselves. With the right support, they can achieve so much.
We keep our sessions affordable at £15, which is far less than many other places. Some get help through direct payments, others don’t, but we never want a two-tier system. Everything we do is about inclusion, opportunity, and respect.”
“Team Rise is not just a project, it’s a family. Our volunteers are the backbone, giving their time every week. People here care for each other, and the friendships built are life-changing. This work is a labour of love, and I know how needed it is.”

Emma’s testimonial
“I don’t even know where to start. I’ve got autism and cerebral palsy, so coming to places like Team Rise has been incredible. I’ve been coming to Team Rise for about 6-7 years. My stepmum initially set it up. Moving into my own place and attending these groups has boosted my confidence massively.
Routine is very important for people with autism, and these groups provide that. Everyday stuff can be difficult, and I’m only able to attend now because of the support from my dad and stepmum, and the guidance I’ve received at these groups.
These groups always try to find activities for everyone, balancing challenge with accessibility. Lessons, scavenger hunts, and outings teach team building, problem-solving, and social skills. Before I knew I had autism, I struggled socially and didn’t have many friends. Coming to these groups helped me connect with people like me. The friends I’ve made here are the longest-lasting friends I’ve ever had.
I hosted a few lessons on Marvel, which I thought people might be bored by, but they were interested and even encouraged me to present more. Because I’ve known the people here for so long, I felt confident. Talking about things I love allows me to engage and share my knowledge.”
“I love the activities, trips, and routine, and it gives me something to look forward to. Losing this would be devastating because it’s a massive part of my life, my social connection, and my confidence. These groups aren’t just a place to come, they’ve changed my life.”
